Chapter Nine

Lucas came back to work the next day, saying nothing of what had transpired between the two of us. In fact, every time I tried to corner him, he found a way to avoid me. I gave up after a full day of him avoiding me and slipped back into the routine that had been my life before it got turned upside down. What else was I supposed to do? I didn’t want to pretend it didn’t happen, but apparently everyone else did.

The only difference in my life right now, of course, was Stark.

A few days had passed since I’d spent the night at his house and this was the first opportunity we had to really talk. He had gotten called away on business unexpectedly and various club duties had kept my feet firmly planted inside the walls of the club.

Stark had managed to allocate some time however and we were currently sharing a dinner he had prepared at his house, each of us sitting on either side of the kitchen island. I was surprised he hadn’t wanted to cart me off to some fancy restaurant. He had ordered Dacey to take a night off and much to her displeasure had also turned off his cell phone. It was a glaring sign that the night was his to do with as he chose. I know it didn’t bother her that I was here with Stark, that wasn’t her problem. He was the president of a worldwide company and if something should go amiss, he would need to be contacted immediately. In her oath to carry out her job as efficiently as possible, it meant keeping in contact with Stark at all times. I didn’t fault her reasoning, but I was grateful for the uninterrupted time alone with him. I also needed someone to talk to that wasn’t demanding a different song or cleaner restrooms. I had even promised her that I would make him check his voice mail at least once during the night.

Not that I expected him to listen to me.

When I had first gotten here, he had said something about sitting in his formal dining room but the long table with its numerous chairs had seemed too expansive and imposing, especially since it was just the two of us. So here we sat, atop two barstools sharing plates of three cheese tortellini.

I knew there were things we needed to really talk about, but he was the one that started the conversation. I seriously sucked when it came to that part of the whole relationship deal because it had been so long since I had been in one.

“Guess it wasn’t as bad as you thought it was going to be.” He raised an inquisitive eyebrow and waited for my response.

I easily guessed what he was referring to and smiled, reaching across the island to skim my hand over his cheek. I confined the touch to strictly just contact of skin and nothing more. While what lay under my skin was vicious, there were times when even it needed tenderness.
